The hardest rhythm of them all

Notes to Self (and Bassists)

Dear Reader

There’s one rhythmic figure that's the hardest.

It’s this one:

Also sometimes written like this:

Here is our animation video for it

Note lengths aside, this is all the same “rhythmic shape”. And it tends to do us in. Pulling it onto the beat, rushing it, or losing it entirely.

Here’s how we conquer it in the Rhythm Matrix:

  • See it clearly. Our animated rhythms strip away confusion.
  • Groove Gym Exercises to get it into your body.
  • Precision Drills to nail it.
  • Practice with focus. PORA-style drills keep your attention on what matters.
  • Apply it musically. You’ll find it in real bass lines (this one is literally hip).

Because rhythm isn’t a mystery.
It’s patterns → precision → embodied groove.
Put those together and you’ve got a deep pocket and endless rhythmic ideas.

👉 In the Rhythm Matrix Cohort, we break down all 16 of these “Lego bricks” over 12 weeks. You’ll drill them, mix them, and apply them until groove feels natural and unshakable.

Cohort kicks off Sept 5. Twice a year only.
